A Fun Reminder

Posted by Mark Abell on November 19, 2009

Check out the new page titled ”Don’t be Like Derek!“. It serves as a fun reminder for the boy scout motto, “Be Prepared”, and can be found under Gear Information on the Camping and Activities page.

Give Yourselves a Hand!

Posted by Mark Abell on November 16, 2009

Troop 16 can be proud to have assisted the Parker Task Force with its November food drive once again this year. In case you didn’t think it made a difference, Parker area scouts and scouters (ourselves included) helped the Task Force fill up its shelves. The food drive generated 763 boxes or 30,520 pounds of food and $5,049.00 (enough for 7 months of operations).  Jim and Bobbie Chinchall, the volunteers that run the Task Force, report that, while metro-wide giving was down substantially from last year, Parker giving was up. When asked why they thought that was, they stated: ‘Rather than hope folks will bring food to us, we make it easy by going to where the food is, and simply asking them to donate. It is a successful strategy, but it couldn’t be done without all the cub scouts and boy scouts that volunteer their time to make it a success.’

Well done Troop 16!

Holy Grail Race - Report from the Front Lines

Posted by Prescott on November 12, 2009

bunny-posterThe Quest for the Holy Grail Adventure Race was this past weekend… this just in.

The Guardian Bunny was defeated, not once but twice.  It was epic.  Team Moosen was dynamite!  They swept in and wiped the bunny out with 21 Battle Power to his 12.  But… Team Ravens, not content to lose in such a way, went back out into the game area to locate the very powerful “Rewind” card, that allows a team to rewind the last action taken.  After sprinting around the game map, they returned with the card, unwound the last round of battle, cut in front of Team Moosen, and played the “Lightning Bolt” card.  Lightning Bolt allows them to win one round of battle instantly.  Much rejoicing from Team Ravens, much bummerness from Team Moosen.

Nevertheless, with their 21 Battle Power, Team Moosen made quick work of the remaining teams in their Battle-Off for 2nd place.  So, both Team Moosen and Team Ravens took home a large trophy cup full of Skittles.  Very cool.

Almost more interesting, were the actions of Team Catapulting Rocks, who attempted to take home both the Troop 16 Cup and the 1st Year Team Cup, with their surprise playing of the “Chill” card on Team Raven, which makes a team sit down for 5 minutes and do nothing.  However, Team Moosen possessed a card that made them resistant.  And, we determined that the 1st Year Teams couldn’t steal the Troop 16 Cup anyway, since they are essentially in different leagues.  It would have been like a Canadian Football team trying to win the Superbowl.

A very successful day and incredibly tasty pig feasting followed - thanks to a team led by Mr. Jimerson, Mr. Santy, and Mr. Brainard.  It should also be mentioned that Mrs. Denton, Mrs. Worby, and others made it possible for all the participants (racers and referees) to remain on the race course by preparing many dozens of individually packaged lunches.  Thanks to everyone involved.

…now back to your regular scheduled programming.

Good Turn Week - November 14th

9-cares-colo-shares1

Each year, Boy Scout Troops around the country participate in Good Turn Week, a week devoted to helping those in our communities through works of service, and Troop 16 is no different. On November 14, 2009, Troop 16 will be participating in its annual Good Turn Week service project by helping with the 9Cares Colorado Shares Food Drive. This is one of two major service projects held during the year (the other is the annual Church Work Day), and all scouts are expected to participate.

As has become our tradition, we will be sorting food gathered during the 9Cares Colorado Shares food drive for the Parker Task Force.  The Parker Task Force is located near the Parker Town Hall Building at 20118 E Mainstreet, Unit D. For those that are unfamiliar with the Task Force, it operates one of two year-round food banks in the Metro Area, and is a highly visible and important centerpiece of our community.

Please click here for more information on this event, and to sign up for a time slot on November 14th.

Holy Grail Maps

qfhgdc-001The Quest for the Holy Grail Adventure Race is at Peaceful Valley this year.  Many have asked, “exactly where in PV should we go.”  Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch is located 11 miles south of Kiowa, out east of Elizabeth.  A link to a map to PV can be found here.

The Race starts and ends at the Old Swimming Pool, now forever dubbed “Castle Arghhhh.”  The race starts at 8am and ends at 1pm.

We will be camping and having the Medieval Feast at the Laramie Campsite.  Feasting starts at 4pm.

Both locations can be located on the map at this link.
