Swimming Merit Badge

Posted by Lisa Denton on August 30, 2010

swimmingThe last session of the water portion of the Swimming Merit Badge is on September 12 from 2-5pm at the Parker Rec Center; $3.50 for scouts.  You may begin or complete the badge at these sessions if you have already started it.

If you would like to attend this merit badge class, you must respond to me by Tuesday 9/7 for the 9/12 class.

At these sessions we will focus on the following requirements: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.  The dry portion for you to do on your own are requirements: 1, 2, 6d, 10.  Requirement 3 has to do with rank advancement; if you are not a First Class Scout, you must have completed Second Class requirements 8a, 8b, 8c and First Class requirements 9a, 9b, 9c.  If you are not sure if you have completed these requirements, email me or discuss at a Scout meeting.

Please note that these sessions are not swimming classes.  Read the badge requirements and practice to be sure that you will pass.  This is a very important badge and no requirement will be signed off unless you are proficient at it.

Go to http://meritbadge.org/wiki/images/d/db/swimming.pdf to download the worksheet.

Yours in Scouting, Mrs. Denton

Northern Tier 2011

Posted by Mark Abell on August 29, 2010

ntier-2010-137sPaddle your way to high adventure in 2011! Troop 16 is trying to put together a trip to Northern Tier High Adventure Canoe Base for summer of 2011. To do so, we need to understand how many boys and adults would be interested in attending Northern Tier next summer.

Please show your interest in attending by signing up by September 7th, 2010. We will place a reservation with Northern Tier based on the information and interest level we receive, and then will create a more formal sign-up and take deposits once we have a formal date reserved.

Sept. Pioneering Campout sign-up now available!

Posted by Joe Kjar on August 25, 2010

img-1576smThe sign-up page for the September Pioneering Campout on the 17th-19th is now active!

We will be building bridges, towers, and maybe even catapults at this annual campout, back by popular demand.  This will be a great opportunity to work on your pioneering skills at Tahosa High Adventure Base.

This is a particularly good campout for Webelos to attend.  We will be making a special effort to get Webelos and their families involved in the weekend’s events.  They will get their hands dirty and may even learn a knot or lashing in the process.

Please reach out to your Webelos friends and other Packs and encourage them to attend this Troop 16 event.  Webelos should contact either Mrs. Veto or Mr. Kjar for more information.

Timing change for Colorado River Trip

Posted by Prescott on August 23, 2010

Please note that the leave time for the Colorado River Mini-High Adventure Trip has changed.colocisco

We will be leaving early on Friday morning, September 24th.  Meet at the Church at 6:30am.  We will drive to Grand Junction/Fuita and hopefully put in the water right after lunch time.  This will also push our return time on Sunday a bit later.  We will be targeting a 4-5pm return, but Sunday traffic on I-70 can be tricky.  So plan for later, just in case.

Sign-up is still possible until Sept 7th at  - http://bsa16.org/v3/camping-activites/high-adventure-camps/canoeing-the-colorado-river-sept-2010/

Please direct questions and possible sources for more Canoes to Mr. Coleman at prescottcoleman@live.com.

We Need Canoes

Posted by Prescott on August 16, 2010

images2We’re putting the call out to all Troop 16′ers.  We need canoes for the September trip down the Colorado River!  We can also use recreational kayaks, but they aren’t quite as desirable.  We had about 12 of them at last year’s Canoe Day event, so I’m hoping they won’t be hard to find.  The Colorado River is wide and sandy, so they should be taken good care of.

At this point, we need 3 to 4 more.

Please let Mr. Coleman know at prescottcoleman@live.com right away if you can help.  Renting canoes is very expensive.

Thanks.

Colorado River Canoeing Info Posted

Posted by Prescott on August 16, 2010

r615-p335-lg1The September High Adventure is canoeing Ruby-Horsethief Canyon on the Colorado River, starting from around Fruita and going into Utah.  This is a Class I-II run with only a couple of wave trains.  However, the scenery is stunning.  It’s like you are in the Grand Canyon.  This is a three-day weekend trip.  We will camp on Thursday night near Grand Junction and spend two nights on the river.  Here is a link to a well known Paddling Website with details of the location.

Click Here for the Camping & Activities Page on this website for more details of the trip.

Right now we are targeting 12 participants, ideally 4 adults and 8 boys, but we have some flexibility.  So sign-up right away.  All participants must be tested swimmers and all Scouts must have or have completed the in-water portions of Swimming Merit Badge.

We will leave Thursday, September 23rd and return Sunday September 26th, 2010.   Costs are probably about $30 per person, but mostly we will be spreading the cost of food, fuel, and anything else among those participating.

The sign-up page is now online and functioning, so sign up now.

Check them out! And don’t forget to update your personal calendars with all that Troop 16 has in store for the next 15 months! It looks like we will be having lots of fun, Troop 16-style!
