2018 Firearm and Archery Training Class Dates

Troop 16 is constantly looking for more adult trained firearm and archery instructors and range safety officers so I wanted to share some important training dates that are being offered through the Denver Area Council in 2018.  To register for any of the below classes, please visit http://www.dacshootingsports.org and hover over DACSS then select Training & Program Events.

OKPIK Registration is now open

Have you ever wanted to be trained in building snow shelters, spending the weekend having fun in the snow, or meeting new scouts and scouters?  Then you need to sign up for Okpik.

Okpik is state-of-the-art training to give leaders, (both youth and adult), confidence in taking groups into a cold environment and support a year-round camping program. Our cold weather training is appropriate only for those leaders and campers who already have basic Scouting skills and mild weather camping experience. Our training includes skills that can ensure a successful, fun and safe cold weather camping experience. The signup link for this fun training experience is below.  Please note that you must be at least 13 years old and first class rank as of January 1, 2018 in order to participate.

Big Horn 2018 – Troop Sponsorship Application

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home units and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

The Big Horn NYLT Course is leadership training experience sponsored by the Denver Area Council and held annually at Tahosa High Adventure Base near Ward, Colorado. The training is conducted by highly qualified youth staff under the supervision of adult advisors.

The course models a month in the life of a unit and consists of six days of Scout activities.

Each year Troop 16 provides sponsorship for some scouts to attend the event. If you are at first class or above and are interested in applying for a sponsorship, you must submit an essay consisting of at least 1 full single-spaced page describing your vision of a great leader and what qualities make great leaders.  Essays must be emailed to scoutmaster@bsa16.org by December 1, 2017 in order to be considered for the sponsorship.

Volunteer Opportunity – Feed My Starving Children Mobile Pack

Every year our charter organization Parker United Methodist Church works with Feed My Starving Children to hand pack special meals for malnourished children and ship these meals to over 70 countries worldwide.  This is a great volunteer opportunity for you and your families to get service hours and help out a wonderful organization.

The event is October 27-28.  FMSC is asking for assistance on Friday October 27th from 4-6 pm.  To register click here and enter join code 1250496.

This is a great opportunity for those of you who need service hours for the Citizenship in the Community Merit badge.

2017 Fall/Winter Leadership Positions

It is time again for the Troop to elect new youth leaders.  The deadline for requesting a Leadership position is July 31, 2017.  If you would like a leadership position for the Fall and Winter term of 2017 and are at or above First Class rank email Mrs. Lipman (scoutmaster@bsa16.org) to request the positions you want to run for.  It is recommended that you request 3 positions with the first being the position you want the most.  Please remember that Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leaders are voted on by the Scouts within the troop and patrol, respectively.  Also, Assistant Patrol Leader and Veteran Gear Coordinator do not count toward rank advancement.

Court of Honor and Potluck Dinner

June 27th is a Court of Honor. The Court of Honor will start promptly at 7PM.  It will be preceded by a Pot Luck Dinner that starts promptly at 6PM and a Wood Badge Beading Ceremony at 6:45PM. Setup for that dinner will begin at 5:45PM. Attendance at the Pot Luck Dinner is completely optional. You can still come to the Court of Honor even if you don’t attend the dinner. If you want to participate in the pot luck, please be at the Church no later than 6:00PM and bring a dish. The breakdown of what to bring is as follows:

Last name ending in A-G – Side Dish

Last name ending in H-Q – Main Dish

Last name ending R-Z – Dessert

Also, we still need an adult or two to assist with keeping the drink containers full during the potluck and ceremony and also assisting the scouts with cleanup.  Please email scoutmaster@bsa16.org if you are able to assist.

Free Orienteering Class

Parker Parks and Recreation is offering a FREE Introduction to Orienteering class for all ages! Join Parker Parks and Recreation to learn what the sport of Orienteering is all about. Discover the difference in a typical topographical map and a specialized orienteering map. Learn how to read the map, understand the symbols and accurately orient the map to your surroundings and navigate using the compass. The class will be on April 24 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Parker Fieldhouse, 18700 E. Plaza Dr. While the class is free, registration is required at www.ParkerRec.com.

Webelos Cross-Over Ceremonies – Updated

Troop 16 will be welcoming several new scouts into our Troop at Webelos cross-over in the next few weeks. The first meeting for these new scouts will be on March 14th, 2017. We need help from current scouts! Please let Mrs. Lipman know as soon as possible if you can attend one of the upcoming cross-over ceremonies. You will earn credit for service hours for your help with these events.

2/18/17 at 6:00 pm – Arvada United Methodist Church 6750 Carr St- Due to the location of this crossover ceremony, T16 volunteers will be given service hours for the drive up to Arvada and back. 2-3 Scouts needed

Scout Sunday signup is now active

Scout Sunday gives us a unique opportunity to serve our charter organization, Parker United Methodist Church, by greeting and ushering Church service attendees. There are three Sunday services, 8:00AM, 9:30AM, and 11:00AM. Our volunteer windows start 30 minutes before each service, and go until roughly 15 minutes after a service concludes. We will also be selling Pancake Supper tickets before and after each service. Scouts must be in their full class A uniform and will receive service hours credit for their participation.

RSVP is required for this event. There are a limited number of spots available in the volunteer shifts, so signup at as quickly as possible. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/409044cafa623a20-scout
