First T16 Scoutmaster passes away

Posted by Prescott on August 1, 2010

dr-rosnikAmid all the tremendous high adventure going on this summer, there is sad news.

Dr. John C. Rosnik DDS, T16’s first Scoutmaster, passed away on July 25, 2010 at the age of 73.  At a time like this it is important to remember that if it hadn’t been for Dr. Rosnik’s committment, the Scouts of Troop 16 wouldn’t have been in the wilds of Canada, summitting a 14′er, or hiking the trails of New Mexico during the week he passed away.  We all owe him an important debt and we should keep his family in our prayers.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 6, 2010 at 3 p.m. at Joy Lutheran Church, 7051 E. Parker Hills Ct., Parker, CO.   According to the Denver Post, donations can be made to Joy Lutheran Church or Boy Scouts of America.

Northern Tier Team Paddles 60.5 miles

Posted by Prescott on August 1, 2010

northern-tier-logo-2010-rThe results from the Spot GPS are in and the final tally is that the Northern Tier team paddled just over 60 miles. Maybe more stunning is they did 21 miles in one day, which included a 0.9 mile portage. This is evidently the longest portage customarily done by NTier teams. In Boundary Waters/Quetico terms this portage was 340 “rods” long. A rod is something like 16.5 feet.

You can download a Google Earth path file by clicking here. If you have Google Earth installed it should provide you an opportunity to “fly-over” the exact route.

Here are the daily distances.

N-Tier Distances (miles)
Day 1 8.2
Day 2 21.0
Day 3 12.7
Day 4 9.3
Day 5 9.2
 Total 60.5

Also, on behalf of the entire N-Tier Team, we want to thank Kristian Ambors, our Interpreter/Guide and Troop 16 Eagle Scout Alumnus. He did a tremendous job teaching and guiding the group.  Thanks Kristian… you’re a towel!!

Track the Northern Tier Trek on the Web

Posted by Prescott on July 19, 2010

northern-tier-logo-2010-rThe Northern Tier team will be carrying a “Spot” GPS tracker.  This device sends a “ping” every 10 minutes throughout the day to a website, which maps our location.

Family and friends can monitor our progress over the 80 miles by going to this website - which will be activated on July 20th - http://share.findmespot.com/shared/gogl.jsp?glId=08mUWrRkH1oBQXKoKLUzp1Izue5P3C5Yy

This is the same tool we used to watch Les Stroud (aka The Survivorman) out on the ice near Baffin Island.

The device will be off at night and reactivated when we get going each morning.  Please have a look.

Survivorman Location

Posted by Prescott on April 21, 2010

map-to-campsite-may-10-smSurvivorman 2010 is at the Gates Backcountry part of Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch (PV) again this year.

This is nice because its close, about 30 mins away.  It also means that if boys or adults can’t come for the entire weekend, they can come for some.

To get to Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch (PV), you go out Hwy 86, past Elizabeth and turn right at Kiowa on N. Elbert road.  Its about 11 miles through the little town of Elbert to PV.  You will want the second entrance on the left.  Signage is ok, but not great.  Once in the Ranch, following the attached map.

Click the Map for a larger version.  More details are available on the Camping & Activities page.

Its about a month til Survivorman 2010, and its time to get prepared.survivorman-challenge-logo-2010

Survivorman is unique in all of Scouting.  It is a competition ripped straight from the themes of Man vs. Wild and the show Survivorman.  One of the best ways to prepare for the Challenge is to watch these shows.  The next best way is to study the Info Sheets below.

Remember, the Challenge is April 30- May 2nd, at the Gates Backcountry Area.  While its the same geography as last year, we’re throwing in a couple of difficult twists.  Good luck.

Sign-up will be on the May 2010 Campout page soon.

The “Welcome Mat” is out for you

Posted by Prescott on January 21, 2010

welcome-mat2010 is a great year to join Troop 16!
The door is open and the welcome mat is out

Cub Scouts often find themselves choosing a Boy Scout Troop in January, February, and March — and we’d love to have you come visit to see if Troop 16 is right for you.  Indeed, because there are lots of new faces this time of year, its a great time for boys who’ve never been in Cubs or Scouting before to join.  Now and throughout the year, we welcome boys from 10-11 to 17 years old.

This website is a great way to get to know us.  Check out our “Calendar“, our “Photos“, and the “About Us” page.  And, to make things even easier, we’ve put together this info-packed Brochure.

Parker’s High Adventure Troop is not for everyone.  We are about high levels of challenge, discipline, an uncompromisingly boy-run program, and advancement.  But, if these things get you energized, stop by a meeting and visit.
