Posted by Robert Holzhauser on January 29, 2020

Sign-ups are now open for the Snow Sports campout to be held Feb 21-23, 2020.

This is a popular campout and affords the opportunity to earn the Snow Sports merit badge.

We will be snow camping at the Tennessee Pass trailhead near Ski Cooper. Ski Cooper is an ideal ski and snowboard venue with plenty of terrain for beginners and experienced skiers alike. Ski Cooper visitors also benefit from smaller crowds and affordable lift tickets. Cost will be standard camp fee of $20 plus the cost of a lift ticket and/or equipment rental (group prices are being negotiated). The Troop encourages adult sign-ups too and we are looking for an adult Camp Host for this campout, contact Mr. Kamm for details.

Winter Campout – January 17 – 19, 2020

Posted by Robert Holzhauser on January 1, 2020

This January 17-19, Troop 16 returns to YMCA of the Rockies Snow Mountain Ranch for our Troop 16 Polar Bear Challenge campout.

If we are lucky the temperature at night will drop below 0° F and we will earn the Denver Area Council Polar Bear Award patch.  This campout will be an education in cold weather camping and cooking.

During our stay we will have free access to the many fun facilities at Snow Mountain Ranch like the Tubing Hill, the ice rink, and Kiva.  The Kiva is a huge gymnasium rec   center where we stay toasty warm and enjoy rollerskating, basketball, ping pong, games, you-name-it.  Nervous about the cold?  Don’t Be!  Your Scout Leaders will give you all the tips and tricks to have a successful, comfortable, and fun winter camping experience.

Camp Host for this campout is TBD (contact Camp Coordinator Brian Kamm (303) 828-8280 if you are interested in hosting).

Posted by Robert Holzhauser on September 26, 2019

How about some spelunking through a cave?!

The campout will give you an opportunity to work toward the Geology Merit Badge and explore the Manitou Grand Caverns. Saturday we will take a 2 1/2 hour tour through part of the cave that is closed to the public. On this tour you will crawl/climb/walk for nearly a mile while learning basic spelunking skills as well as the history and geology of the cave.  Sign Up on Troop Track

The troop is going to cover the cost of the spelunking. Cost for the campout will then be just the customary $20.

PARKER BREWFEST – SATURDAY AUGUST 17, 2019 For the 3rd consecutive year, the Cherry Creek Valley Rotary Club has asked Troop 16 for our help during Parker Brewfest. This fundraising event allows the Rotary Club to provide financial assistance to local charitable and community causes as well as to international projects.

We are looking for both adult and scout volunteers to work 4 hour shifts on Saturday and in return you will have money deposited in your scout account. Based on last year’s results each shift worked by either an adult or a scout equated to about $50 in your account!

Our duties include bringing ice to the vendors throughout the event, filling and emptying water containers at each vendor station, trash duty, and helping with the setup and breakdown of the event.

June 2019 – Whitewater Rafting Adventure

Posted by Robert Holzhauser on May 10, 2019

Troop 16 scouts have requested a whitewater rafting adventure, and here it comes. Join us June 21 – 23 for a camping trip to Buena Vista, Colorado, including a full day raft trip on the Arkansas River.

We will camp in the group site at the Buena Vista KOA which has shower and bathroom facilities nearby the tent site. On Saturday we will make a short drive to Wilderness Aware Rafting and embark on a full day raft trip on the Arkansas River which includes a lunch provided by the rafting company. We are currently planning the Narrows Express section but Wilderness Aware may modify the section rafted based on flow to ensure it is appropriate for ages 10+. This company has years of experience with scout groups and an excellent safety record and experienced guides. The cost of the rafting is $110 (a great discount) in addition to the standard camp fee of $20 plus the fuel charge of $10 to reimburse drivers, making a total weekend cost per person of $140. This is a great way to introduce Scouts and Scouters to the scenic beauty of our nearby Colorado treasures, the Arkansas River and Brown’s Canyon. Adults are encouraged to sign-up to share the adventure with their scout!

Registration Deadline: Monday, June 10, 2019 so that scouts can do a swim check at the Pool Party, June 11.
