July Hagerman Tunnel Trail Hike

Description:

The July campout will be a day hike on the Hagerman Tunnel Trail.  It is considered an easy hike, bout 6 miles round trip.  The hiking trail is the old railroad grade that the Colorado Midland Railroad used back in the late 1800’s.  The historic and engineering feats that were accomplished by this rail line include the tunnel, which has year round ice due to its elevation, and the Hagerman Trestle, a lengthy and one of several trestles the line used.  Since this is only a day hike we will work on rank advancement when we are done with the hike and relax in the beautiful San Isabel National Forest.  You will not want to miss this historic and breathtaking adventure.

About the Hagerman Tunnel Trail:

Take a pleasant walk along the abandoned Colorado Midland Railroad grade through spruce-fir forest. The site of Colorado’s longest railroad trestle can be visited before heading up an old wagon road to the ruins of Douglass City, which once housed laborers working on the Colorado Midland Railway. The trail continues up to Opal Lake, site of the old steam boiler that provided power to build the Hagerman Tunnel. The trail continues as a hiking trail up to the railroad bed and shortly to the entrance of the Hagerman Tunnel, which in its time was considered a tremendous engineering feat. The return trip follows the railroad grade back through several old snow sheds (only one has some timbers left) and past another trestle site.
