Philmont Travel Plan and Other Info

Posted by Mark Abell on July 16, 2010

Troop 16’s Philmont crews will be at Philmont from July 22 - Aug. 3. Both crews will travel to and from the ranch together.

We will meet at the church at 7 a.m. on Thursday, July 22 and depart at 7:30.

**Please bring as sack lunch or money for fast food for lunch on Thursday.**

The general route is south I-25 to the New Mexico/Colorado state line. Just south of Raton, we will take US Highway 64 to the Philmont Scout Ranch which is near Cimarron, NM. We will make two rest stops on the way. The trip will take approximately four hours.

We plan to arrive at Philmont between 11:30 a.m. and noon. The rest of the day will be devoted to check-in, equipment draw, shake-down, and crew duties. The boys will spend the first night in “Tent City” at the Philmont HQ base camp. From there they will hit the trail for 10 days.

The last night at Philmont will also be spent in Tent City. On Tuesday, Aug. 3, we’ll depart at approximately 8 a.m. after we eat breakfast. We’ll follow the same route we took coming down (in reverse, obviously). We should be back by to the church by 12:30-1 p.m.

Class A uniforms will be worn on the trip down and at all base camp activities. We will leave the uniforms in the trucks while on the trail.

Scouts should bring a change of clothes and a toiletry kit so they can shower on the last day at base camp before coming home.

Philmont has an amazing trading post where scouts can purchase memorabilia, so please bring some spending money. They will also need some money while on the trail to purchase root beer, snacks and extra rounds for rifle and shotgun shooting.

The ranch only distributes mail to crews at the beginning and end of the trek. Family and friends can write to the scouts at:

Scout name, expedition number (see below)

Philmont Scout Ranch, BSA

47 Caballo Rd.

Cimarron, NM 87714

Our Troop has two Expedition numbers:

-Crew lead by Dan D. and Steve Denton is: 722-J1

-Crew lead by Brandon A and Gary Napier is: 722-J2

Scouts will be able to write home while on the trail and mail their letters from any staffed camp.

Cell phone coverage is very sporadic so do not expect phone calls. If there is an emergency and you need to get in touch with the crew, Philmont’s 24 hour emergency number is 575-376-2281.
