Timing change for Colorado River Trip

Published by Prescott under T16 on August 23, 2010

Please note that the leave time for the Colorado River Mini-High Adventure Trip has changed.colocisco

We will be leaving early on Friday morning, September 24th.  Meet at the Church at 6:30am.  We will drive to Grand Junction/Fuita and hopefully put in the water right after lunch time.  This will also push our return time on Sunday a bit later.  We will be targeting a 4-5pm return, but Sunday traffic on I-70 can be tricky.  So plan for later, just in case.

Sign-up is still possible until Sept 7th at  - http://bsa16.org/v3/camping-activites/high-adventure-camps/canoeing-the-colorado-river-sept-2010/

Please direct questions and possible sources for more Canoes to Mr. Coleman at prescottcoleman@live.com.

We Need Canoes

Published by Prescott under T16 on August 16, 2010

images2We’re putting the call out to all Troop 16′ers.  We need canoes for the September trip down the Colorado River!  We can also use recreational kayaks, but they aren’t quite as desirable.  We had about 12 of them at last year’s Canoe Day event, so I’m hoping they won’t be hard to find.  The Colorado River is wide and sandy, so they should be taken good care of.

At this point, we need 3 to 4 more.

Please let Mr. Coleman know at prescottcoleman@live.com right away if you can help.  Renting canoes is very expensive.

Thanks.

Colorado River Canoeing Info Posted

Published by Prescott under T16 on August 16, 2010

r615-p335-lg1The September High Adventure is canoeing Ruby-Horsethief Canyon on the Colorado River, starting from around Fruita and going into Utah.  This is a Class I-II run with only a couple of wave trains.  However, the scenery is stunning.  It’s like you are in the Grand Canyon.  This is a three-day weekend trip.  We will camp on Thursday night near Grand Junction and spend two nights on the river.  Here is a link to a well known Paddling Website with details of the location.

Click Here for the Camping & Activities Page on this website for more details of the trip.

Right now we are targeting 12 participants, ideally 4 adults and 8 boys, but we have some flexibility.  So sign-up right away.  All participants must be tested swimmers and all Scouts must have or have completed the in-water portions of Swimming Merit Badge.

We will leave Thursday, September 23rd and return Sunday September 26th, 2010.   Costs are probably about $30 per person, but mostly we will be spreading the cost of food, fuel, and anything else among those participating.

The sign-up page is now online and functioning, so sign up now.

Congratulations to Eagle Will P.

Published by Mark Abell under T16 on August 11, 2010

willebor01Please join me in congratulating Will P. on achieving the rank of Eagle.  On Monday, Will passed his Eagle Board of Review to forever join the ranks of Troop 16 Eagles at #89.

For those that may not know, Will has impressive life ambitions which include attending a military academy and a possible run for President of the United States, so Mr. Santy assembled an equally impressive and high-powered Eagle Board. It was made up of: Parker’s Mayor Casiano; Bennie Milliner, a staffer with Senator Bennet’s office in charge of Military Academy recommendations; Mike Buchart, District Eagle Advisor; Mr. Kelly Cottingham, Eagle Scout and parent of a T16 Eagle currently attending the Air Force Academy; and Mr. Jeff Mueller, parent of a T16 Life Scout.  The Board was very impressed with the young man that Will has become; and Mr. Milliner is sure to be an advocate for Will as he works his way to an Academy.

Congratulations to the entire Parker family!

TROOP FAMILY PICNIC - AUG. 10th

Published by Deb Worby under T16 on August 7, 2010

Mark your calendars for the Annual Troop Family Picnic on August 10th.  Once again, the picnic will be at the Canterberry Crossing Master Association pool, which is located at east Mainstreet and Canterberry Trail (22500 Canterberry Trail) in Parker.  The festivities will start at 6:00 p.m. and go until 9:00 p.m.  The troop will supply the main course (hamburgers & hot dogs, of course), and everyone is  being asked to bring their favorite receipe according to the following:  last name starting with A to M, bring a side dish; and N to Z, bring a dessert.  It’s important that you sign up for this event no later than Aug. 8th if you plan to attend.  Also, we need a couple folks to step up and volunteer to be the troop’s Grillin’ Chefs for the night, and a few folks to show up around 5:30 to be the set up crew, as well as a few to stay and make sure all is clean and tidy at the end of the night.  Thank you to Cindy Grim for arranging this fabulous family event, as well as to all who plan to make this the Troop’s best summer picnic ever!!

First T16 Scoutmaster passes away

Published by Prescott under T16 on August 1, 2010

dr-rosnikAmid all the tremendous high adventure going on this summer, there is sad news.

Dr. John C. Rosnik DDS, T16’s first Scoutmaster, passed away on July 25, 2010 at the age of 73.  At a time like this it is important to remember that if it hadn’t been for Dr. Rosnik’s committment, the Scouts of Troop 16 wouldn’t have been in the wilds of Canada, summitting a 14′er, or hiking the trails of New Mexico during the week he passed away.  We all owe him an important debt and we should keep his family in our prayers.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 6, 2010 at 3 p.m. at Joy Lutheran Church, 7051 E. Parker Hills Ct., Parker, CO.   According to the Denver Post, donations can be made to Joy Lutheran Church or Boy Scouts of America.

Northern Tier Team Paddles 60.5 miles

Published by Prescott under T16 on August 1, 2010

northern-tier-logo-2010-rThe results from the Spot GPS are in and the final tally is that the Northern Tier team paddled just over 60 miles. Maybe more stunning is they did 21 miles in one day, which included a 0.9 mile portage. This is evidently the longest portage customarily done by NTier teams. In Boundary Waters/Quetico terms this portage was 340 “rods” long. A rod is something like 16.5 feet.

You can download a Google Earth path file by clicking here. If you have Google Earth installed it should provide you an opportunity to “fly-over” the exact route.

Here are the daily distances.

N-Tier Distances (miles)
Day 1 8.2
Day 2 21.0
Day 3 12.7
Day 4 9.3
Day 5 9.2
 Total 60.5

Also, on behalf of the entire N-Tier Team, we want to thank Kristian Ambors, our Interpreter/Guide and Troop 16 Eagle Scout Alumnus. He did a tremendous job teaching and guiding the group.  Thanks Kristian… you’re a towel!!
