SCUBA High Adventure

Who’s ready for some SCUBA?! Troop 16 will be hosting a SCUBA High Adventure Certification Dive Trip to the Blue Hole near Santa Rosa, NM during Spring Break, 2013. An informational meeting will be held January 15th at 6:30 pm.


Troop 16 is preparing to venture into the deep blue, by holding a 3-part SCUBA certification High Adventure for those that are interested. The three parts are:

  1. Classwork reviewing the certification requirements and books in a Merit Badge Classroom Setting (February 9 and 10, 2013 both days are required, times TBD)
  2. Pre-certification Practical Dive(s) in a Pool (February 16 and 17, 2013 both days are required, times TBD)
  3. Certification Dive and High Adventure Trip to Blue Hole near Santa Rosa, NM during Spring Break, 2013 (either Saturday – Tuesday 3/23-3/26/13, or Thursday – Sunday 3/28-3/31/13, dates TBD)

Blue Hole is a natural circular, bell-shaped pool that is 80 feet across at the surface and 130 feet across at the bottom. The pool is 66 degrees year-round, and is 80 feet deep.


Spring Break, 2013. We are scheduling the trip for 4 days, with 2 days of diving (approx 8 hours one way) and two days of dives  with a certified dive instructor.

Approximate Cost:

The cost of the materials and pre-certification dive is estimated at around $200.00

The trip to Blue Hole, with gas, camp fees, pool entrance fees, and Scuba Certification Dive Instructor is estimated at $450.00. ($200 for dive instructor and gear, $80 for food during travel, $50 for food while there, $20 for camp site fees, $50 for fuel, and $50 extra just in case).

Total Cost Estimate: $650.00. All participants will pay their portion of actual expenses incurred on the trip. This estimate is for budgeting purposes.

Crew Advisor:

Mr. David Boyd will be our Crew Advisor and host for this trip.

Special Requirements:

Youth must be at least age 13 and First Class at the time of the Certification Trip, and have passed the BSA Swim Test within the past year to be eligible. Class 3 medical forms are required.

Adults must have passed the BSA Swim Test within the past year. At least one adult on the trip must be certified in Wilderness First Aid, Safe Swim Defense, and Safety Afloat.
